Save the Whooping Cranes

The cranes that winter in our coastal marshes are endangered, and we're putting them in more danger. Help prevent even more of the remaining 263 cranes from dying off this year.

Sign our petition urging Gov. Rick Perry to restrict the amount of water that industry can take from the rivers that feed the cranes' habitats.

Learn More: Protecting Texas' treasures

In June 2006, we helped convince the Fish and Wildlife Service to establish the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge, protecting one of Texas' last wild rivers, the surrounding forests, and habitat for wildlife like bobcats, river otters, and the threatened American Alligator. Read more.

The Texas coast depends on the freshwater that flows from our rivers into our bays, and supports tourism, commercial fisheries and recreational fishing. Unfortunately, excess water diversion is causing significant harm to our coastal communities and ecosystems. This harm is exemplified by the plight of the endangered whooping crane.

Whooping cranes are majestic, endangered creatures that migrate 2,400 miles to winter in Texas coastal marshes. But irresponsible industrial and agricultural water withdrawals are draining the marshes and wrecking their habitat. As a result, nearly 10 percent of the 270 remaining birds died just in 2008. And the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service predicts another die-off this season.

Governor Perry please direct your state officials to ensure that sufficient water is left in the rivers that feed the cranes' habitats.
