Action alert from our friends at the Texas Conservation Alliance:

Congress will vote Wednesday on H.R. 2262, to provide reforms to the infamous 1872 Mining Law.

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS TODAY AND ASK HIM OR HER TO VOTE FOR H.R. 2262!

It’s hard to believe that hardrock mining on federally-owned lands (your lands!) are still governed by a law that is 135 years old!  It lets mining companies extract minerals for $5 or less per acre and requires little or no clean-up.  Taxpayers subsidize this mining to the tune of $100 million a year and get polluted, wasted land and water for their money.

On Wednesday, your representative will have the chance to vote for a bill to reform the 1872 law.   H.R. 2262 will still allow access to public lands for mining, but will provide important reforms to ensure our public lands are protected:  requiring compensation to taxpayers for extraction of minerals, use of the revenues to restore fish and wildlife habitat impacted by mining operations, and helping to ensure that certain special places, including our national parks and monuments, are not damaged by mining.
