On Friday, April 17, the San Antonio Environmental Network held a forum featuring three of the main contenders in the May 9 San Antonio mayoral election: Councilwoman Diane Cibrian, Trish DeBerry-Mejia, and former Councilman Julián Castro.

Environment Texas provided the following question for the candidates: “President Obama has called on Congress to pass legislation capping global warming pollution. However, according to the San Antonio Current, CPS Energy has spent more than $90,000 in ratepayer money lobbying against such a plan. Who do you agree with: President Obama or CPS Energy?”

Here are their responses:

CIBRIAN: “Are you kidding me? I’m putting them on the agenda for next month! No, I do not support CPS Energy, I support President Obama and I believe we should do so. I’m going to ask CPS about this $90,000 and find out if it’s correct and let them know I do not support that.”

CASTRO: “Yes, I support President Obama’s ambitious goals. It’s been absolutely refreshing to see the change in leadership in Washington and to see truly a forward-looking administration compared to what we’ve had over the last 8 years. Obviously, we’re running in a non-partisan race, my views are much more in line with President Obama on these issues than with the previous administration.”

DEBERRY-MEJIA: “It’s disturbing if $90,000 of ratepayer money has been spent aggressively lobbying against such a plan. Yeah, those are important questions we need to be talking to CPS about. It’s in direct contrast to what the Administration has laid out. It’s disappointing and disturbing at the same time that that amount of money has been spent. It just goes to show we need more stakeholders at the table, more transparency, and more accountability as far as CPS is concerned, so this money isn’t being spent without us knowing about it.”
