Environment Texas Summer Report 2007

To Environment Texas Supporters

Thanks to overwhelming public pressure, TXU announced that they would drop plans to build eight of 11 proposed coal plants as part of a proposed buyout. A diverse coalition of environmentalists, led by Environmental Defense and Public Citizen, mayors, ranchers, religious and business leaders worked tirelessly to stop the coal plants.

This is great news, and we are proud to have played an important role in the victory. From mobilizing our members to contact the Legislature, to teaming up with the interfaith organization, Texas Impact, to developing a brochure on religious concerns about the coal plants, to making the case for cleaner alternatives, Environment Texas helped generate the pressure that forced TXU to the negotiating table.

Unfortunately, there are still 11 dirty coal plants on the drawing board in Texas — the three remaining TXU plants and eight others.

At a time when scientists are telling us we must do everything in our power to reduce global warming pollution in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we can not afford more dirty coal plants. Plus, we have much better alternatives like energy efficiency and renewable power like wind and solar.

Environment Texas will continue to watchdog the coal plants and push for efficiency and renewables legislation that would eliminate the need for the plants.
