Environmental groups today called on CPS
Energy and the City of San Antonio to move more aggressively into
renewable fuels like wind, solar, and tidal power, 1200 WOAI news
reports.
The call comes one day after the Pearl
Brewery's developer, Silver Ventures, Inc. announced that the former
beer warehouse on the property, which is being converted into office
space and condos, will be the largest solar powered facility in the
state.
"We call on the City and CPS Energy to
actively support 20% renewable energy by 2020," said San Antonio Sierra
Club Chair Jerry Morrissey. "A federal standard will establish a level
playing field for public and private electric utilities."
CPS Energy is already a national leader
in renewable energy, getting some 10% of it's power needs from two vast
wind farms in west Texas.
Activists placed pinwheels in Maverick Park north of downtown to demonstrate the power of the wind.
"There is no question America has the
know how to move beyond fossil fuels and to tap into our abundant
renewable energy resources," said J.J. Karabias of Environment Texas.
"We have the technology and resources in America's backyard to produce
clean energy at home, we simply lack the political will to tap into the
potential."
Activists called on both incentives and restrictions to not only
convince utilities to produce more renewable resources, but also to
convince San Antonians to use less electricity.
