Global Warming Could Mean More Austin Floods (new window)

The activist group, Environment Texas Research and Policy Center, released a report, claiming we could see even more destructive floods.

Luke Metzger, Director of Texas Environment, said, "Powerful storms with heavy rainfall are 28% more frequent in Texas than they were 60 years ago."

"The message from all that is pretty clear. What was once the storm of the decade will soon seem like just another downpour."

The group looked at data from the United Nations, the National Climatic Data Center and more than 3,000 weather stations across the country over 59 years.  The report only looked at storms with heavy rainfall.  It predicts extreme weather in Texas, because of global warming.

However, there are skeptics, who think it's too early to jump to conclusions.

Drew Thornley, Policy Analyst for the Texas Public Policy Foundation, says, "I think it's foolish to assume we know all the answers to the intricacies of Mother Earth, this vast complex earth we live on."

Thornley believes the global warming debate is not over, saying, "We don't need to be scaring people. We don't need to use scare tactics to scare people to latch on to a certain political agenda. We need to come to the table of debate."

Evidence of global warming is overwhelmingly supported by the scientific community.
