Environmentalists push for anti-pollution legislation (new window)

Texas environmentalists are once again pushing the Legislature to reduce toxic pollution.

A new study by Environment Texas claims exposure to toxic pollution from industrial companies affects the health of people living in nearby communities.

The report claims health problems such as cancer, birth defects or neurological damage are linked to toxic pollution.

“In Nueces County and Jefferson counties the citizens there have much higher rates of cancer there than the rest of the state," Liz Wilfong of Environment Texas said.

State lawmakers are taking steps to reduce emissions in Texas. There are currently two bills filed in the House and another in the Senate.

House Bill 2363 which would require the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) create an Air Pollution Watch List to identify areas where levels of known air contaminants may cause adverse health effects. Public notices and public meetings would be required to inform residents.

HB 2475 and SB 1906 would regulate toxic hotspots under the Texas Clean Air Act. It would require areas that exceed pollution standards be designated as hotspots, and require TCEQ to enforce emissions reductions until the standards are met.
