Hours before Gil got his expensive bill, President Obama promised to put some of our hard-earned money back into our pockets. He's enforcing new regulations that require auto makers to produce cars and trucks that will average 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025.
Luke Metzger of Environment Texas says the fuel savings will outweigh the sticker price.
"It's expected to save Texas consumers $ 6.2 billion in the year 2030," Metzger said. "It's a monumental leap forward in cutting the pollution that causes global warming and reducing our dependence on oil."
Metzger drives a Toyota Prius. According to www.fueleconomy.gov, the 2012 Prius averages 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 on the highway.
